The product is a pre-WWII Lionel lifeboat compass and housing made of copper and brass in the United States. It includes a 1941 4" boat compass, adding to its historical and collectible value. The materials used and its country of origin give it a unique and authentic charm that would appeal to collectors of model railroads, collectors of Lionel wartime production,  and collectors of maritime compasses and brass instruments. The compass is quite heavy.  It is missing a light 

 

These were stored in Navy lifeboats.   The bracket on the back was designed to hook onto a boats boats transom.  The compass is gimballed so that it stays level as the life boat rocks from side to side.  

 

Displays very nicely, with nice patina.  Gorgeous!
